MAMA'S GONNA BUY ME A MOCKINGBIRD

No, this is not a Mockingbird. This is the Wyoming State Bird: Western Meadow Lark (Sturnella neglecta)

Do you know your state bird? The state bird of Mississippi is a Mockingbird and I just saw one land on my herb garden on the back porch. Of course, I didn't have time to get my camera but he sure was pretty. I think he likes basil or thyme. He is always at that end of the bed.

I love the pretty Wyoming state bird. It think he is really pretty. Here is a link to find out if you don't know yours, which I am sure all you enlightened readers already know yours. But it is fun to see the other states. You can even hear most of the birds sing. Unfortunately all I got was a rocked out version of "Mama's Gonna Buy me a Mockingbird" when I clicked on my bird video. LOL

We have mockingbirds everywhere in our neighborhood! They chase the cats--it really funny that they are such brave little birds!

Well, isn't that a magnificent bird photo! So regal looking. Yeah, I have lots of mockingbirds. They dive at me sometimes and I hose him with the water hose to keep from getting pecked!

Georgia bird is the Brown Thrasher. I usually see them at the woods edge scratching around. I did not know this bird until we moved here 7 years ago….

Tennessee's is the mockingbird too. I love the meadowlarks. They are SO camera shy. Quite a good picture there of yours.

Tina already revealed that the Tennessee state bird is a Mockingbird....so I will tell you that i have a few favorite birds ~~ Tufted Titmouse, Chicadee and the Rufous Sided Towhee. How are you doing down there by the gulf?

When the photo popped up, I thought "wow, the mockingbirds in Mississippi don't look at all like ours in Texas". haha The mockingbird is our state bird, too, here in Texas! We have tons of them around here, and they keep me entertained.

I miss the song of the western meadowlark. I grew up in Kansas where it is also the state bird. The inverted trill is so evocative.

The Common Loon is the state bird here.

Gail, we have escaped this season without too much harm done. I know Hurricane season isn't over but a major storm has never hit us this late in the season and it is going down to 62 tonight. That's a good sign that a change is on the way. I think the worst is over for most on the Gulf Coast.

Hi, Eve--So glad you've made it through the storms ok--the destruction in Galveston is heart wrenching. The state bird of VA is the cardinal--we have lots in the backyard--I'll have to try to get a picture.

That bird is so beautiful! I have never seen one like that. We always have Bluetits nesting in a hole in the gable end of the cottage each Spring I can't bring myself to block it up although it needs it as a colony of bats come to roost for the Summer!

I don't know about you Eve, but that Wyoming bird is much prettier than our Mocking bird! Do you think they would trade with us?

Eve said...

Now,now Susie...beauty isn't everything. LOL

What other bird has the talent to sing like all the other birds? I wonder which one is his real voice? I knew a singer like that once.
But that Meadowlark is awesome, and a cardinal is just breathtaking.

Hi Eve,

Our state bird in Florida is also the Mockingbird.

Seems I see more Cardinals than anything else around our place.

I watched a meadow lark high in a walnut tree one day, the song was so beautiful, I wasn't sure what it was until I got out the binoculars out and sure enough. It was dusk, so the evening sun was just setting and the bird burned bright yellow on his high perch...I was fortunate!

The Iowa state bird is the Goldfinch and right now they are loving the dried seed heads of the coneflowers. Two weeks ago I saw a flock of 30-40 along the roadside on the shoulder. I have driven the fieldroads for years and have never seen that sight before.

Have a wonderful evening.

Thanks for coming over to visit. I wish I could have made your nephew a banner. It would be an honor. Let me know when he comes home again and I'd be happy to send you one. Mimi

I would love to see a mockingbird or this meadowlark in my yard! I do see lots of cardinals, though, which are the state bird of Illinois.

Hi there, I do believe your web site could possibly be having web
browser compatibility issues. When I take a look at your blog in Safari, it looks
fine however, when opening in Internet Explorer, it has some
overlapping issues. I merely wanted to give you a quick heads up!
Apart from that, fantastic blog!
